UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) is the largest public funder of research and innovation in the UK, with a budget of over £8bn. It is composed of seven disciplinary research councils, Innovate UK and Research England.

We operate across the whole country and work with our many partners in higher education, research organisations businesses, government, and charities.

Our vision is for an outstanding research and innovation system in the UK that gives everyone the opportunity to contribute and to benefit, enriching lives locally, nationally and internationally.

Project SIMPLE is co-funded by the businesses in the consortium and UKRI through the Made Smarter Innovation Challenge. The Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) Manufacturing Made Smarter Round 1 Competition offers grant funding investment in projects that focus on the use of industrial digital technologies (IDTs) to transform the productivity and agility of UK manufacturing. Of 34 applications submitted, project SIMPLE is one of 14 projects approved following independent assessment and expert review.

UKBIC

The £130 million UK Battery Industrialisation Centre (UKBIC) is a pioneering concept in the race to develop battery technology for the transition to a greener future. The unique facility provides the missing link between battery technology, which has proved promising at laboratory or prototype scale, and successful mass production. Based in Coventry, the publicly-funded battery product development facility welcomes manufacturers, entrepreneurs, researchers and educators, and can be accessed by any organisation with existing or new battery technology – if that technology will bring green jobs and prosperity to the UK.

In addition to funding from the Faraday Battery Challenge through UK Research and Innovation and the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, UKBIC is also part-funded through the West Midlands Combined Authority. The project has been delivered through a consortium of Coventry City Council, Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership and WMG, at the University of Warwick. UKBIC was created in 2018 following a competition led by the Advanced Propulsion Centre with support from Innovate UK.

FDS specialises in the development and integration of control and software solutions for manufacturing industries. In the last 5 years, FDS has developed expertise in the development and deployment of Industrial IoT integration platforms and common manufacturing and production data models, in line with the requirements of Industry 4.0 and digital manufacturing solution development.

AI Idea Factory

AI Idea Factory is a startup based out of Wales looking to enable the manufacturing industry through use of Agile and AI. The company, with its network of local and international partners, looks at MVP development to product scaling for relevant manufacturing problem statements. The company continues to create proprietary tools and algorithms to accelerate AI adoption and exploitation.

4th Wall Virtual

4th Wall Virtual focuses on rich multi media content creation (AR/VR, 3D 360 streams) and mobile application development with rich UI/UX, includingAR/VR-based user interfaces. 4th Wall has been working with WMG on a number of industrial projects, including UI development for tool tracking solutions within the manufacturing industry, digital twins and the development of AR based apps to support the monitoring and maintenance of industrial equipment.

STFC

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is a world-leading multi-disciplinary science organisation, with the goal to deliver economic, societal, scientific and international benefits to the UK and its people – and more broadly to the world. STFC supports an academic community of around 1,700 in particle physics, nuclear physics, and astronomy including space science, who work at more than 50 universities and research institutes in the UK, Europe, Japan and the United States, including a rolling cohort of more than 900 PhD students.

The STFC Hartree Centre aims to transform UK industry through high performance computing, data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Backed by over £170 million of government funding the Hartree Centre is home to some of the most advanced computing, data and AI technologies and experts in the UK, working with industry and the research community to deliver transformative gains in performance, productivity and time to market.
